Since 1975, Energy Economics, Inc. has been a trusted provider of meter repair and remanufacturing, cathodic protection solutions, and precision calibration equipment for the natural gas industry. Our Meter Management System (MMS™) is proprietary software used by gas utility meter shops to track meters from intake through repair, testing, and redeployment — integrating with our SonicNine™ Sonic Nozzle Provers and other shop-floor testing equipment.

The Role

We're hiring a Software Developer to take ownership of MMS as our long-tenured developer moves toward retirement. This is a hands-on role with real ownership: you'll work across the full lifecycle of the application — development, testing, deployment, and customer support — as part of a small, senior software team.

The bigger picture: MMS currently runs on Gupta (SQLWindows), a legacy development platform, backed by an Oracle database. Our software team plans to port MMS to a modern .NET stack. You will be the primary implementer of that migration. The development team (both senior developers, plus your manager) owns scoping and architectural direction — you won't be handed a blank page and asked to design a rewrite in isolation — but you will be the one building it, and your day-to-day decisions about how much of your time goes toward supporting the legacy Gupta system versus building the replacement will directly determine how fast that migration moves.

This is not a maintenance-only role, and we want to be upfront that it's also not a "rewrite with no legacy baggage" role. You'll be doing both at once for a while.

You won't be doing this alone. Our current MMS developer has several more years full-time before retirement — plenty of runway for a real handoff on the legacy system. Separately, our other senior developer works in .NET and will be a resource as the migration ramps up. You'll have a Gupta mentor early on and a .NET mentor as the project matures.

What You'll Do

• Support and maintain the existing MMS application (Gupta/SQLWindows, Oracle backend) for current utility customers

• Lead implementation of the MMS port to .NET, working from scope and direction set by the development team

• Own your own code end-to-end: build it, test it, deploy it, and support it when customers hit issues

• Work directly with customers (gas utility meter shops) to troubleshoot production issues

• Work closely with our retiring MMS developer during a multi-year transition (2 years full-time, part-time after), and with our .NET-focused senior developer as the migration progresses

• Collaborate with part-time QA/testing support

• Document your work in a way that doesn't leave the next person guessing — we're actively building out our quality management system and clean documentation matters here

What We're Looking For

• Solid fundamentals in software development — you don't need Gupta/SQLWindows experience (virtually no one does; you'll learn it from our current developer)

• Comfort working with relational databases and SQL (Oracle experience is a plus, not required)

• Some professional development experience is preferred (roughly 1–3 years), though we're open to a strong recent graduate with demonstrated project experience

• Ability to work independently and manage your own priorities as your responsibilities grow with the retiring developer's transition out

• Willingness to do unglamorous work: legacy code, direct customer support calls, and shop-floor-adjacent troubleshooting are part of the job

• Comfortable being on-site in Dodge Center, MN at least 2 days per week; we'd prefer someone who already lives in the area

Compensation

$75,000–$95,000 base salary, commensurate with experience:
